ABOUT ME

Hello I'm Claire.

I write, paint, draw, create things, and perform music with my super-talented twin sister, Sarah.

The way I imagine things hasn't evolved much since I was a kid. I still wonder - what if things in the world engage with us in ways we can't perceive? What if things we can't perceive engage with us? That's where my stories begin

About Mert the Anxious Evergreen

This is not a sad book. But the reader ends up caring a lot about what happens to these folks -- you get emotionally invested. Adults get as easily wrapped up in the story and characters as kids. The book is appropriate for almost any age. Read it to young children or give it to an independent young reader or adult! Your whole family will root for Mert. (Yes, you'll “root” for a tree.)

You're going to laugh, too. You'll laugh at dear, naïve Mert and silly, know-it-all, doesn't-have-a-clue John. (He's a bit of a contradictory character.) There's absurdity, which balances out the seriousness of their predicament.

By the end, you're going to feel as though Mert and his entourage are close friends. And you'll feel warm, happy and grateful. There's a lot of love in this book. You'll be surprised once or twice, too. There's a lot of fun to be had reading Mert's story.

How might adults relate to the characters?

Perhaps you're one of the townsfolk responding to someone in need. And sometimes you're Mert. You are eager to please and desperate to help, but you feel helpless like you've got a stump for legs and no audible voice. You dive in without knowing what your'e getting into. You need help but you don't know how to ask for it. Or you're John. Generally, you're very observant and perceptive, but you can also get overzealous or distracted and take off running before you know where you're going.

Maybe you're Sally; warm, independent, nurturing, patient and generally OK with everything but on the verge of being really NOT okay with how things are headed. Or you're Cole and you love what you do so much you can't bear the thought of having to change your lifestyle or line of work. All you know is your work so it's all you do even if the situation calls for something different. Or you're Ol' Joe and you see yourself as a grandfatherly protector of others but you're prone to acting out of desperation, thus putting at rish the things you cherish most.

Maybe you're Mr. Upton; you might be capable of a change of heart once you fully realize the consequences of your actions. It depends on who you are or what side of your personality a character embodies. They're all very human, likeable sorts. They're simultaneously strong and weak. They can be misguided at times, but also good at heart and ultimately well-intended.

And of course everything turns out well in the end.
